Born in the French part of Switzerland, Composer
Sylvie Degiez, learned piano as a child, and after graduating from the State of
Vaud teacher's academy, began to teach music professionally. A student of
composer Jean Perrin at the Lausanne Conservatory of Classical Music, she earned
a grant that brought her to New York. Playing around with NYC music improvisers
such as Rashied Ali, Perry Robinson, Steve Swell, Rosi Hertlein to name but a
few reopened the child in her. Math, physics, astronomy, the study of ancient
scriptures from various origin is nourishing her inspiration.
Since 1987 she has created numerous music
performances for venues local and abroad, including Gift of Eagle
Orchestra with guitarists Wayne Lopes and Van Manakas, the Cosmic
Legends series at the Kitchen, an inside-out interpretation
of 4'33'' for John Cage's memorial at Summer Stage, an opera
"Venus" in Goteburg, Sweden with Biggi Vinkeloe. Her compositions for
ballet include Women's feet for Daphne Rosenblum, Nagual with
swiss dancer/choreographer Zoe Reverdin, "Unveiling the Lovers"
in the Laba festival, Cabaret Muse

simultaneously in Turkey and in NYC. She's collaborated on musical theater
projects in Switzerland and the US with longtime friend Pierre Dubey. Her most
recent theater project "Cosmic Brew" is a
game-play to expose participant to the link between music/math/physics at the
Metropolitan Playhouse in NYC. Sylvie has been also a frequent guest artist at
the MAKOR/92ndStreetY residency program directed by Anat Litwin, now at
14StreetY. She hosts The Moon Saloon, an
evenings of poetry and improvisation at 92YTRIBECA.
